Summer 2022 Programs

for Children and Families

Our summer programs run from

June 14th to August 5th

**REGISTRATION OPENS JUNE 1ST**

 

Free science lessons are available for groups of 15 or more. Reservations are required for all groups. Our maximum capacity for summer is 35 children.

Field trips start in the historic lecture hall with a lesson by our museum educator. Groups then explore nature through guided experiences in the museum and teaching garden (weather permitting).

 

Museum Field Trips 

These programs are appropriate for all ages and last approximately an hour. Part of the program will take place outdoors (weather permitting). Each day has a specific lesson topic:

Tuesdays: FOSSILS

How does a fossil form? Learn all about ancient life on Earth and the clues living things left behind.

Wednesdays: POLLINATOR POWER

Why are flowers so important to us? Learn about different animal pollinators and their impact on our lives.

Thursdays: CITY NATURE

Where can we find nature in the city? Learn about urban ecology and living and non living relationships in our city environment.

Fridays: INSECT ADAPTATIONS

Why are insects the most successful living thing on the planet? From camouflage to mimicry, learn how insects adapt to live all over the world.


Fridays in the Field

Explore the local ecosystem in the Wagner's teaching garden on Fridays from 1-3:30pm. Outdoor activities include:

  • Find and identify city birds who fly through our garden

  • Learn about local geology with our Rock ID scavenger hunt

  • Observe bees and butterflies as they fly around in the pollinator garden

  • Use a dichotomous key to identify different types of trees 

  • Take time and draw what you see

Groups generally spend an hour. One chaperone required for every 5 students. Small family groups are welcome without a reservation. Large groups encouraged to make reservation.

 

Cost

All of our programs are FREE, although donations are encouraged. The recommended amount is $5 per child. This is a suggestion - - any contribution your group can offer will make a difference.
