Policies

The Library and Archives is open to all interested researchers, by appointment, free of charge. Appointments should be made at least one week in advance by contacting the Librarian. Please review the following policies carefully prior to your visit.

Access: The Library is a non-circulating research collection. The stacks are closed. Upon arrival researchers are required to complete a registration form and provide photo identification (driver’s license, institutional identification card, passport, etc.).

Security: Briefcases, bags, purses, and other personal property must be left at the entrance to the reading room. Only pencils, papers, and laptop computers are permitted. The use of any type of ink pen or permanent pencil is not permitted. The staff reserves the right to examine all materials used at the table.

Use: A call slip must be filled out for all library and archival materials requested. Materials cannot be removed from the reading room, and in the case of archival materials, cannot be rearranged from the order in which they are delivered to the researcher. For the protection of the collections, staff members reserve the right to restrict access to records that require further arrangement, description, processing, or conservation, or additional security due to exceptional value. In some cases, copies may be substituted for originals.

Handling of materials: Researchers are expected to handle material with great care. Material may not be leaned on, written on, folded, or handled in any way likely to damage it. Handle brittle books with extreme care to prevent tears, creases, and damage to the spine. Support props will be provided by the Library. Keep all manuscripts, photographs, drawings, etc. flat on the table. The text and illustrations of books and manuscripts should never be touched. Eating, drinking, and smoking is strictly prohibited.

Photocopies: The Library will honor photocopy requests when such duplication neither injures the condition of the materials nor violates the provisions of copyright laws. Photocopies are made for a fee by the staff and are provided for the researcher’s personal reference use only. Supplying a photocopy is not an authorization to publish.

Rights and Reproduction: Photographic reproduction services and permission to publish are available for a fee. Researchers must obtain all applicable copyright permissions, as well as written permission from the Wagner Free Institute of Science. The Library does not surrender any rights to the material when it grants permission to cite and publish items. Exclusive rights to examine or publish material will not be granted under any circumstance. In the event that this project becomes a source for publication, the Library requests a copy of the publication along with appropriate acknowledgement in the publication.
