There will be an optional field trip to the Wagner Free Institute of Science and its surroundings.

Through a series of illustrated case studies, this course will provide reconstructions of a variety of historic landscapes throughout Philadelphia. We will discuss what plants, animals, and habitats existed at these locations in the past, and compare these previous ecologies to current conditions. Implications for urban greening initiatives will also be discussed. The five case studies will focus on Frankford (Northeast Philadelphia), the Woodlands Mansion, Cemetery, and Landscape (West Philadelphia), FDR Park and Marconi Plaza (South Philadelphia), Cresheim Creek (Northwest Philadelphia), and the Wagner's neighborhood in North Philadelphia.
