Evening with an Expert

Minerals from the Classic Local Mines

with Ronald A. Sloto

A special night of minerals and wine, sponsored by

the Philadelphia Mineralogical Society

Tour starts promptly at 6:00

Doors open at 5:30 for a wine and cheese reception

Amethyst, Wagner Museum Case 33B

The Wagner’s mineral collection spans both the local and the international, with shiny magnetite from the French Creek Area, deep green malachite from Australia, and neon sulfur from Sicily. The specimens are arranged in the cases by type—so you can contrast 36 different manifestations of calcite, or see local and Swedish rhodonite sitting side by side.

You can experience the collection firsthand in the company of Ronald A. Sloto—geologist, curator, and author—at his upcoming Evening with an Expert gallery tour on March 13. He’ll guide a small group of participants through our mineral collection, pointing out important specimens and offering context beyond our hand-lettered curator’s labels. He’ll weave together mineralogy, geology, history, and biography—along with his collection of old photos and drawings—to describe some of the classic mines in the region. You’ll learn about Brinton’s Quarry and the French Creek Mine from a seasoned expert as you wander through the Wagner’s collection. And you’ll enjoy wine and cheese as you listen.

Our Evening with an Expert series highlights the original purpose of the Wagner museum—to stand as a complement to the lectures and courses, so that students could explore scientific principles by examining real specimens in the presence of a guide or professor. Our Evening with an Expert series brings in local scholars to guide small groups of people through specific areas of our collection. Now, just as in the 1890s, you can explore the collections in the company of an expert.

About our Expert: Ronald A. Sloto is an honorary professor and curator of the mineral collection at West Chester University. He conducts research on minerals occurring in Pennsylvania. Before coming to West Chester, he spent 41 years working as a hydrogeologist at the United States Geological Survey, where he conducted resource appraisals, modeled groundwater and surface-water, ran water-quality studies, did borehole geophysics surveys, and studied radionuclides in water. He also pioneered the use of rainfall-runoff models to test flood-control structures, and developed HYSEP, a hydrograph-separation computer program that is used worldwide today. He has written more than 80 journal articles and reports, in addition to two books—The Mines and Minerals of Chester County, Pennsylvania, and The Mines and Minerals of Berks County, Pennsylvania. He is at work on a companion book about Montgomery County.
